Homepage

Welcome.

We plan to develop this site as part of the project legacy with skills and resource sharing, information, current training and development practice, new opportunities and project updates.

This website has been designed as a training resource for museums, heritage organisations, historic houses and galleries in the East of Scotland as part of a 4-year funded project. Whether you are a trustee, curator, manager, front of house assistant or volunteer, we hope this website will provide information, advice and answers to your questions, and help to keep you in touch with the wider heritage sector.

Our aim is to create a website that is easy to use and above all useful to you, so if you have a comment or suggestion on how the site can be improved, please feel free to email  Fiona Colton, Project Manager  on fcolton@scotborders.gov.uk  or telephone 01750 20096.

This website contains the following sections, all of which can be accessed from any page of this website via the menu bar on the left as well as from the links below:

A huge thank you is due again to Mary, Victoria, Phoebe, Laura, Gilly and Stacy all for their sterling contributions within the team and in providing excellent levels of service from April 2005 to September 2008.  Also to the project Steering Group members Elaine, Fergus, Jo, Elizabeth, Sandra and Annette for their invaluable input, superior wisdom and good humour in the face of interminable tender document review!

Last but certainly not least, sincere thanks to Michelle and Helen of Enhance People Consultants Ltd for being wonderful programme consultants, trainers and evaluation team members.

Mentoring  View
Information on mentoring and links to the Museums Association (MA) mentoring pages.

Further information will be added in due course.  At present Museums Galleries Scotland is also running a short term mentoring pilot scheme so it will be interesting to review outcomes from that.  This also be a timely development and will link usefully with the training and Development Project's Leadership and Management Programme for winter/spring 2009 which aims to provide mutual support and nurturing for the next generation of willing mentors.

CPD  View
CPD, or Continuing Professional/Personal Development, is a process of lifelong learning for all individuals and teams in order to enable professionals to expand and fulfil their potential. The cultural heritage sector is excellent at developing lifelong learning opportunities as part of its service to the public but such opportunities should also be available to all staff and volunteers working within the sector. So, the articles on this page are designed to inspire ideas for how you can develop your own CPD PLAN and how to contribute effectively to, or create a culture of, continuous learning within your organisation.

Skills Exchange Who's Who  View
Want to find out about Coal Mining in Fife, Working with a Living Artist, or get advice on how to draw up an emergency plan ? Then check here to find out if someone in the East of Scotland can offer advice.  You can also use the Who's Who to discuss museum related issues with colleagues in the East of Scotland via email.  What better way to pose questions to a wider network of museum professionals and to get answers to common issues?  For example, if you're thinking of starting up a "Friends Of" scheme and don't know the best way to go about it, send a message and see if someone in the East of Scotland has already set one up.

Case Studies  View
Look here for inspiration and examples of good practice from museums, galleries, university collections and heritage organisations in the East of Scotland.  If you have been on an inspiring training course or attended a really good collections management event then why not share your experience and learning with others and do a short piece for the website?

Research
Alongside the project's training programme, Project staff have conducted research, evaluation and training needs analysis on all project activities during 2004 to 2008.

Plus occasional forays into the following areas :

Our Evaluation, Options Appraisal and Legacy Report, launched on 25th September 2008 (or an Executive Summary of it in abridged version) is available to partners and stakeholders free of charge, upon request, by emailing   fcolton@scotborders.gov.uk   or call 01750 20096.

These documents contain a wealth of information on Project activities that took place over a 40 month period; case studies, statistical analysis and innovative ideas for learning journeys or CPD activities.

You will be amazed at the range of amazing places people managed to visit on their learning journeys!  Estonia, Vienna, Catalonia, Venice and Germany... to name but a few.
